This actual patient of Dr. Michael Lum had her horizontal forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet lines treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

BOTOX has become such a household name. You probably know several people who get these treatments regularly. Yet, you still may be concerned about whether BOTOX is safe.

Cosmetic botulinum toxin injections are known by many simply as BOTOX, though we now have a total of 5 different types of cosmetic botulinum toxin A products approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

So, is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe? The short answer is yes when performed by a licensed and skilled health care provider. There are a few minor risks involved, but these are temporary. There are no long-term or life-threatening effects when correct doses are used for cosmetic treatments. The experienced injector always strives to give you a natural-looking result.

What are possible side effects?

· Bruising, redness, and mild soreness – This is possible with just about any type of injection. A good provider will take a gentle and careful approach to make you as comfortable as possible.

· Headache – This affects less than 10% of Botox patients treated; it is mild, and temporary.

· Infection – This is very unlikely if the injection site is cleaned before the procedure. Patients often inadvertently touch the injection sites after the skin is cleaned.

· Droopiness –Depending on where and how injected, it can cause a droopy eyebrow, a heavy or droopy eyelid, or an undesired result when it affects unintended muscles. Your provider should always follow up with you, especially if you are a first-time patient.

· Allergic reaction – This is very unlikely, but can be serious, particularly in those who have allergies to human albumin or cow’s milk protein (in the case of Dysport). Daxxify has no human or animal by-product.

· Blurred vision – This is very uncommon. Double vision can happen if injections are placed too close to the eyes.
