What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a safe, proven, and non-surgical treatment that improves the appearance of spider veins and small reticular (blue-green) veins commonly found on the legs or ankles.

The procedure involves injecting a specialized solution, called a sclerosant, directly into the affected veins. This solution gently irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the treated veins are naturally absorbed by the body, and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins—leaving skin visibly clearer and smoother.

How Dr. Lum Evaluates Spider Veins Before Sclerotherapy

Before recommending sclerotherapy, Dr. Michael Lum, D.O. performs a careful medical evaluation of your veins to determine whether treatment is appropriate and safe.

Not all visible veins should be treated the same way. During your consultation, Dr. Lum assesses the size, pattern, and location of the veins, reviews your medical history, and evaluates factors such as circulation, prior vein treatments, and lifestyle considerations. In some cases, underlying venous insufficiency or larger varicose veins may need to be addressed before cosmetic treatment is considered.

This physician-led evaluation ensures that sclerotherapy is used only when it is medically appropriate—and that results are both safe and effective.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are tiny, dilated blood vessels visible beneath the skin’s surface. They can develop due to:

  • Genetics and family history
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause)
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Sun exposure
  • Aging and reduced circulation
  • Previous leg injury or vein trauma

Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for treating unsightly spider veins in your legs and other areas. It’s a gentle procedure Dr. Lum performs to introduce a sclerosant solution into small unneeded blood vessels to damage them. After the procedure, these veins harden, shrink, and eventually fade away.

SCLEROTHERAPY – SPIDER VEIN TREATMENTS FAQS

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are smaller in size and are found closer to your skin’s surface. These tiny veins often affect more than half of women and might look like a spider’s web. Veins can appear on your legs, feet, face, and numerous other areas. While spider veins are usually harmless, they can cause:

  • Discoloration
  • Aching
  • Burning
  • Swelling
  • Night cramps
  • Dull pain
  • Pain from spider veins might worsen after you stand for long time periods. Fortunately, a simple minimally invasive treatment helps to reduce spider veins and their symptoms.

Before and during sclerotherapy, Dr. Lum makes sure you’re as comfortable as possible. You will lie on the exam table while Dr. Lum cleans the areas he will treat. He then inserts only the tip of a fine needle into spider veins to inject them with a special solution known as a sclerosant. You may experience a slight stinging or cramping during the injections, but most patients tolerate the procedure very well.

Almost all patients see significant improvement with each treatment, and multiple treatments are usually necessary for optimal clearance. Small spider veins and feeder veins may be treated.

Soon after sclerotherapy, you can get up and walk around. You are encouraged to walk around for 10-30 minutes after treatment and as much as possible. Avoid standing in one position for prolonged periods.

You may wear taped compression bandages, which can be removed in 2 to 24 hours, depending on the advice of Dr. Lum. You may be required to wear support hose for up to two weeks.

You will avoid hard physical activity such as high-impact aerobics, running or weight training for 48-72 hours. Avoid hot baths for about 2 weeks. You may shower. Avoid sunbathing for about 1 week. Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools for 48 hours. Unless taken for other medical reasons, avoid blood thinning medications for at least 24-48 hours.

It may take a few weeks up to a month or longer for the treated veins to fade. The number of treatments you will need depends on the amount and extent of your spider veins. Most people typically need at least 2-6 treatments for best results. Treatments are spaced six weeks apart.

A medical evaluation is important to determine whether veins are superficial spider veins or signs of a deeper venous condition that may require a different approach or referral.

At Lumier Medical, sclerotherapy is performed under physician oversight by Dr. Michael Lum, ensuring proper vein assessment, injection technique, and post-treatment care.

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat superficial veins. While many patients seek treatment for cosmetic reasons, proper medical technique and evaluation are essential.

The number of sessions varies depending on the size, number, and location of spider veins. Some patients require multiple treatments for optimal results.

Treated veins typically begin to fade over several weeks as the body absorbs them, with continued improvement over time.

The treated veins do not return; however, new spider veins can develop in the future due to genetics, aging, or hormonal factors.

Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day. Compression stockings and specific aftercare instructions may be recommended to support healing and results.

Physician evaluation helps ensure that veins are appropriate for treatment, reduces risk, and improves outcomes by using the correct technique and solution.
