This actual patient of Dr. Lum received Botox® Cosmetic for the very first time. She was in repose in both photographs. Left (before treatment); Right (2 weeks after Botox treatment for forehead lines). Only 10 units of Botox were used for her treatment. This is only half of the recommended dose of 20 units for horizontal forehead lines.

What do you suppose will happen to her forehead skin in 4 months once the Botox effect has worn off?

A) It will return back to the way was before treatment immediately.

B) I heard that once you get Botox, you have to keep getting it. Otherwise, your skin will shrivel up. So once she stops using it, she will look worse.

C) Even though the Botox is no longer paralyzing the muscle, the forehead lines will still look softer.

D) I don’t know.

These photographs were taken over 4 months apart. Left (just before Botox treatment); Right (over 4 months later after the Botox effect subsided, and muscle activity resumed).

The correct answer is (C).
Even though the Botox is no longer paralyzing the muscle, the forehead lines will still look softer. By relaxing the forehead muscles, the skin was able to do what it was trying to do all along—heal itself! Botox treatments should be thought of not only as curative, but preventive!

If you chose (B) as the answer, you are not alone. Many people assume that once you start using Botox and/or dermal fillers, you will have to keep using them. Otherwise, your skin will shrivel up, look stretched, or simply look worse. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are three common sources of misinformation: the news media, your friends, and family. Listen to the latter two, but ignore them all.

(D) is also a good answer.

Is this treatment approved by the FDA?
Yes. Botox® Cosmetic was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of horizontal forehead lines in 2017. This makes it the first and only neuromodulator indicated for three facial areas: the frown lines, crow’s feet, and now the forehead lines.
