Philosophy of Care

Dr. Lum educates and empowers patients so they can make informed decisions about their aesthetic goals and treatment options. He uses best practices, up-to-date standards of care, and encourages continuity of care. Dr. Lum is excited to welcome new patients to Lumier Medical.

A D.O. is a complete physician licensed to practice medicine and surgery, evaluate, assess, diagnose and treat patients, and prescribe medications in all 50 states. The title D.O. stands for doctor of osteopathic medicine.

You may not be aware whether your physician is a D.O. (osteopathic physician) or an M.D. –(allopathic physician). Both are complete physicians in the United States.

D.O.s and M.D.s belong to a separate yet equal branch of American medical care. They are alike in many ways.

Applicants to both D.O. and M.D. medical colleges are required to have four-year undergraduate degrees with an emphasis on scientific courses.

Beyond college, both D.O.s and M.D.s complete at least four years of basic medical and clinical science.

After medical school, both D.O.s and M.D.s complete internships and/or residencies. This involves another three to six years of specialty training.

Both D.O.s and M.D.s can choose to practice in any specialty area of medicine — such as pediatrics, family practice, internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, plastic surgery, neurology, orthopedics, anesthesiology, pathology, radiology or obstetrics.

D.O.s and M.D.s must pass comparable board examinations to obtain state licenses.

D.O.s and M.D.s both practice in fully accredited and licensed hospitals and health care facilities.

D.O.s represent a unique branch of American medical care that started in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O. Dr. Still was dissatisfied with 19th century medicine and was one of the first in his time to study the attributes of good health so that he could better understand the process of disease. His philosophy of medicine dates back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine that focused on the unity of all body parts. D.O.s practice a “whole person” approach, not to be confused with “holistic” medicine. Instead of just treating specific symptoms or illnesses, D.O.s regard your body as an integrated whole.

The philosophical differences between D.O.s and M.D.s dates back to their historical origins. However, both are responsible for practicing the same standards of care, diagnostic and treatment modalities. Both are accorded the same professional privileges in the practice of medicine and surgery.

You are more than just your skin. You are the sum of your mind and body parts. Your mental well-being, aesthetic goals, and overall health are equally important as your natural looks. Dr. Lum is an aesthetic physician you can interact with the way you would with a primary care physician. That’s because Dr. Lum’s educational background is rooted in primary care through osteopathic philosophy from medical school, an osteopathic multi-specialty rotating internship, and a three-year M.D. family practice residency. He was board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in 1992.

Dr. Lum does not believe in focusing on one treatment modality because there are multiple factors that age us, and many ways to address them. Aesthetic procedures are purely elective. He will suggest a combination approach that is practical, reasonable and premised on evidence-based medicine, consistent with safe practice guidelines. We treat not only diseases, but also prevent them by encouraging healthy lifestyle habits, diet, and an avoidance of their causes.

Our fundamental mission is to preserve and renew the well-being of our patients.

We believe in preventive medicine and in a “whole person” approach to health care. An individual is more than just the sum of body parts or what appears on the skin surface. We do not focus exclusively on one technology trend, treatment modality or product. We focus on what will best serve the patient as a whole person, consistent with sound medical care and practice. We believe in continuity of care.

  • Recognition of Primacy of Consumer Welfare: We are dedicated to serving the individual interests of the consumer on the premise that the interventions are compatible with ethical practice and appropriate care.
  • Recognition of Patient Autonomy: We must be honest with patients and empower them to make informed decisions about their care.

We are committed to consumer advocacy, safety, education, and strive to promote medical professionalism and integrity.

Our primary goal is to prioritize the enhancement of doctor-patient interactions, rather than adopting a profit-driven business approach that compromises the quality of patient care. We firmly believe in prioritizing excellence over quantity, fostering a sense of collaboration within our profession, cultivating mutual respect, and providing compassionate care to individuals as patients, rather than treating them as business clients.

One of the first aesthetic devices added to my medical practice emitted intense pulses of light energy.

Lumière is the French word for “light” and Lumen is a measurement of light, coined by a French physicist.

Lum is written in Chinese as ?, and means forest. Don’t miss the forest for the trees, because “Lum” is also in “Lumièr.”

“Lumière” was purposely truncated to “Lumièr,” as I endeavored to create a unique label to a practice that would pay homage to its new beginnings.
